ART PROJECT AT THE VIKING FARM 2005

During the Autumn and Winter an art project took place at the Viking farm. Artist Tord Larsson decorated the hall in the longhouse.

Around the walls in the hall there now are woodcarvings, ca 30 meters long, entirely made by hand. They contain motifes from sagas and myths and took about three months to complete.
Below there are details from two carvings. To the left a raven, carved above one of the doors in the hall. To the right a woman greeting guests with a horn filled with mead.

There were also two pieces of tapestry made which are now hanging on the walls opposite the chief´s throne. Each tapestry took one month to complete and were painted on linen cloth.
The first one shows the chief returning after travelling many years in foreign lands. The second one shows a party taking place in the longhouse to celebrate the return.
Below to the left a detail of the first tapestry, at that point not finished. In the middle and to the right details from the second tapestry.

Inspiration came, among others, from the famous Bayeux tapestry which you can read more about HERE.

The art project was inaugarated during Eastern, March 25-28 2005. During these four days around 1000 people came to the Viking farm to look at art, try different kinds of Viking food, look at all the houses and see craftsmen working.
